Thing 18

I think slideshare is fantastic. I mean why reinvent the wheel? If you need a presentation on a subject and an excellent one is already done, and it can be shared, why not use it? I chose the one I did because homework is an ongoing debate. As for classroom uses, they are numerous. Slide shows could be used to prepare, instruct, review, to preteach, reteach, to present different viewpoints, to use as a pretest or post-test, because you could design questions to go along with the slides. The following one on The Crucible would be an excellent pre and post assessment.

I don't know why nothing happens when you click on the TV, it didn't work on Slideshare either, but I still find this presentation highly useful. I think Slideshare is the best thing so far and I will share it with my colleagues. As for personal uses, I will share it with my adult children who are teachers, parents, trainers, film makers, and students (most are more than one of these, I don't have 5 children, only 3, although I am also counting my daughter-in-law). I will certainly look for slide presentations to use on my personal blog because it is just such fun!

  1. I really liked your homework debate presentation. I teach juniors and seniors in high school. I do not assign homework. I assign work to do in class and I walk around and am available to help. If students do not complete their work in class then they have to do it on their own(but are given enough time to complete in class). If students are struggling with a question I address the question with the entire class and that will lead to a discussion/debate and the correct answer. I teach my class like a college class. I think home time should be for studying. I do not grade work done in class. Students grades come from tests. I normally do not have a problem with students working on work during class time. I go over assignments with the class at the end of each chapter. The students who just write in the answers and do not complete the work learn early on that they will not be successful in the class. I do not think high school prepares students for college. I try to put more responsibility for their learning on them!

  2. I think what you do makes sense. I know many students whose grades reflect that they do not do homework, not that they do not understand the content of the class. What about poor test takers though, do they have another way to show what they know if they fail your tests again and again, but are attentive and engaged during class time?

  3. I found the homework information interesting. I really feel in elementary that most students should have no homework if they are using their time wisely in school. However, when they choose not to, then homework is their consequence.
